Why Your Garage Door is Your Home's Most Vulnerable Point
During a hurricane, the garage door is statistically the most common point of structural failure in residential buildings. When a non-wind-rated garage door fails in high winds, the resulting pressure change can cause roof uplift and wall failure — turning a wind event into a catastrophic structural failure.
FEMA research after major hurricanes consistently shows that homes with wind-rated garage doors have significantly lower structural damage than those without. For Houston homeowners in hurricane-exposed areas, this isn't a nice-to-have — it's a safety requirement.
Texas WindCode (Texas Admin Code Chapter 61, Subchapter B) establishes minimum wind-speed ratings for garage doors installed in designated wind zones. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) enforces windstorm inspections for coastal county construction. See installation service.
Texas WindCode Requirements for Houston Areas
Galveston County (Galveston, Texas City, La Marque, Dickinson, Kemah, League City portions, Seabrook, La Porte portions): New garage door installation requires TDI WPI-8 certification. Doors must be rated for the applicable design wind speed — typically 120–150 mph depending on location. TDI windstorm inspection is mandatory before the home can be insured.
Harris County coastal areas (La Porte waterfront, Seabrook Bay area, Pasadena Ship Channel): Wind-rated doors recommended but not always required. Check with your insurance carrier.
Inland Houston (most of Harris County, Fort Bend, Montgomery): No wind-rating requirement for garage doors. However, wind-reinforcement kits for existing doors add meaningful protection at low cost ($50–$200).
Key rating to look for: Doors rated for 120 mph (1-second gust) or higher are appropriate for most Houston coastal zones. Galveston Island and exposed West End properties may need 150 mph+ ratings.
Wind-Rated Door Options and Costs
Wind-rated doors are standard steel or insulated steel doors with reinforced hardware — heavier tracks, stronger rollers, and steel strut reinforcement on door sections.
| Wind Rating | Best For | Door Cost Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Reinforcement kit (existing door) | Inland areas, budget upgrade | $50 – $200 |
| 100 mph rated door | Inland areas, basic protection | $0 – $200 premium |
| 120 mph rated door | Harris County coastal areas | $200 – $400 premium |
| 140 mph rated door | Galveston County requirement | $300 – $600 premium |
| 150+ mph rated door | Galveston Island, exposed West End | $500 – $1,500 premium |
Premium above base door cost. TDI windstorm inspection adds $150–$300 for required certifications.
TDI WPI-8 certification process: After installing a wind-rated door, a Texas Department of Insurance-authorized inspector must document and certify the installation. This certification is required for your homeowner's insurance to cover the structure in coastal wind zones. Contact us to schedule a wind-rated door installation.
Areas Requiring Wind-Rated Doors in Houston Metro
Required areas (TDI windstorm inspection mandatory):
- Galveston — Full island
- Texas City — Coastal areas
- La Marque — Galveston County
- Kemah — Bay-front areas
- Seabrook — Clear Lake coast
- Dickinson — Galveston County portions
- League City — Galveston County portions
Strongly recommended (insurance reasons):
- La Porte — Galveston Bay exposure
- Baytown — Galveston Bay proximity
- Deer Park — Ship Channel storm surge zone
Reinforcement kit recommended (additional protection):
- All other Houston metro areas in major hurricane track zones

What to Do if Your Garage Door Was Damaged in a Storm
After a hurricane or severe storm damages your garage door, act quickly:
- Secure the opening — If the door is off-track or has large gaps, temporary boarding or a tarp prevents further water intrusion and security breach
- Document damage — Photos of the door, tracks, hardware, and surrounding frame for insurance claims
- Call for emergency service — We respond same-day to storm damage calls across Greater Houston. Call (832) 737-0091.
- Don't force a damaged door — Trying to operate a door with bent tracks or broken springs causes additional damage
- File an insurance claim — Wind and hail damage is typically covered; flood damage requires separate flood insurance
